Our hens are allowed to free-range in a pasture balanced with minerals. Their mobile coop is moved every few days to encourage them to forage fresh areas and allowing them to have a diverse diet. Frequent rotation also ensures adequate distribution of poultry manure within the pasture to feed our soil life.
The chickens lay their eggs and spend the night in a coop that can be moved to wherever we need them to be. The bottom is fenestrated and allows most of their droppings to fall to the ground. The roof is sloped and a gutter collects rain water into a barrel for their water source. It is well ventilated, but provides enough shelter to keep them comfortably out of the elements and, when closed up for the night, safe and secure.
Due to the fact that our chickens are allowed to free range, their diet is diverse and consists of insects, seeds, plant shoots, earthworms, frogs, snakes, and whatever else they find. This means their eggs are richer and more flavorful than typical store bought eggs, with deep orange yolks. This translates to more vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and beta carotene available in each egg.
